LAHORE: Secretary Industries and Commerce Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi has said that the automobile industry has a key position in the national economy, but to increase its share in the GDP and get its proper share in the global market, the difficulties must be removed.

This sector is providing wonderful opportunities for value added exports; therefore Punjab government is providing all possible support for the development of automobile industry. Secretary Industries and Commerce, Dr Ahmad Javed Qazi said this while addressing an industrial symposium organized by PAAPAM at the Expo Center Johar Town here on Sunday.

There is a favorable atmosphere for the development of industry including the automobile sector.

He said that 10 special economic zones are functional in the province while recommendations have been sent to the federal government for three new special economic zones; there are vast opportunities for domestic and foreign investors in these special economic zones. There are also 24 small industrial estates for investors in the province, he added. He said that University of engineering and technology Lahore is contributing much to promote auto mobile and engineering sector and Punjab Tianjin University of technology, Mir Chakar Khan University D.G. khan and Rasool University Mandi Bahauddin are producing high quality technologists. There is a need to strengthen the linkages between academia and industry.

Secretary Industries and Commerce congratulated PAAPAM for organizing the seminar. He said that such seminars are helpful in the policy making process, the recommendations that come out in this symposium will be utilized. He said that the holding Auto show is a welcomed step. 153 local and international exhibitors are participating in this event, factories making cars, tractors and motorcycles, apart from factories making auto parts have set up stalls.

Chairman PAPAM Abdul Razzaq Gohar, Chief Organizer Symposium Iftikhar Ahmed and others also addressed the seminar while a large number of industrialists participated in the seminar.
