(Karachi) The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has nominated PPP's Yousuf Raza Gilani as their joint candidate for Senate chairmanship, local media reported on Monday.

As per details, the decision in this regard has been taken during the meeting of PDM huddle in Islamabad which was convened by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

All opposition parties supported Gilani as their candidate for Senate chairman. PML-N and Awami National Party also supported his candidature from the platform of the Pakistan Democratic Movement.

Speaking during the PDM meeting, Bilawal Bhutto said that they were given the challenge to ensure an upper hand in Senate and they had successfully achieved it.

On March 3, after a nail biting contest, Pakistan Peoples Party Candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani won the Senate seat from Islamabad, defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's Hafeez Sheikh.

Gilani secured 169 votes, while his opponent Sheikh got 164 Senate votes. According to ECP, seven votes were rejected in a one-on-one contest between PDM and PTI on the general seat of the National Assembly.

However, PTI still managed to claim majority in Senate by securing 18 seats followed by PPP with eight seats.
