Islamabad High Court orders to unban PUBG in Pakistan

  • The decision comes just hours after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) decided that PUBG remains blocked.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday has ordered to unblock online game Players' Unknown Battle Ground (PUBG).

Justice Amir Farooq of the Islamabad High Court annulled the decision of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to ban PUBG and ordered immediate restoration of the online game.

The decision comes just hours after the PTA decided that PUBG remains blocked. The decision has been made by the Authority after a detailed hearing conducted in PTA on July 9 on the directions of the Lahore High Court, PTA said in a statement.

Other interested parties also attended the hearing. PTA has approached PUBG management to share data about PUBG sessions and users in Pakistan and controls in place by the company. However, the response from PUBG is awaited, the regulator informed.

Despite calls for unban, PUBG remains blocked in Pakistan

It may be recalled that PTA had temporarily banned the online game PUBG on July 1. The PTA had clarified that the decision to temporarily ban the game was taken in view of numerous complaints from various sections of the society.

The decision lead to a heated debate on social media regarding the ban on the game and the trend of #UnBanpubgInPakistan became popular.

It may be recalled that the Supreme Court days ago took notice of the immoral content on social media and hinted at the closure of YouTube, which was opposed by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Digital Pakistan Tania Aidrus and Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry.
