Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appeared before the Supreme Court bench in a contempt case on Monday amid tight security. The law enforcement agencies had declared a security alert in areas near the SC and closed several roads leading to the building. The FC and Rangers were also deployed to help the capital police in maintaining security, a police official said.
He said that a team of bomb disposal squad searched the court building early in the morning. All the visitors had to pass through special 'walk-through' gates. Special passes had been issued to the visitors and no entry was allowed without the pass. Surveillance helicopters were also used to monitor the security situation.
He said that around 400 police personnel including 3 Superintendent of Police (SPs), eight Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and other police officers as well as rangers were deputed.
The Red Zone remained sealed for every type of traffic till the Prime Minister left the Supreme Court building.
The stringent security measures resulted in major traffic jams on different avenues creating problems for commuters and motorists.
Meanwhile, a partial disruption in internet and mobile services was observed at the time when the Prime Minister appeared in the Supreme Court. However, when contacted, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and officials of different mobile companies denied any disruption in their services.
