Gayle out as West Indies opt to bowl in second ODI

Published December 22, 2017 Updated December 22, 2017 11:40pm

CHRISTCHURCH: The West Indies will be without talisman Chris Gayle for the second one-day international against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday.

Gayle has failed to recover from illness and has been replaced by Kyle Hope, captain Jason Holder said as he won the toss and elected to bowl.

But Gayle's absence had no bearing on Holder's decision.

"We fancy ourselves chasing," he said, with the West Indies needing to win to keep the three-match series alive after New Zealand won the first match by five wickets.

"The wicket seems a good one and hopefully won't change much and we can hold New Zealand to a reasonable total and chase it down," he added.

The only other change for the West Indies sees Sheldon Cottrell in for Kesrick Williams.

Tom Latham takes over as captain for New Zealand who are resting regular skipper Kane Williamson and strike bowler Tim Southee.

Neil Broom comes into the New Zealand side for Williamson with Matt Henry replacing Southee.

New Zealand have won all six ODIs they have played previously on Christchurch's Hagley Oval.

Teams:

New Zealand: George Worker, Colin Munro, Neil Broom, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (capt), Henry Nicholls, Todd Astle, Doug Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Trent Boult

West Indies: Kyle Hope, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Mohammed, Jason Holder (capt), Rovman Powell, Ashley Nurse, Ronsford Beaton, Sheldon Cottrell, Shannon Gabriel.

Umpires: Wayne Knights (NZL), Bruce Oxenford (AUS)

TV Umpire: Chettithody Shamshuddin (IND)

Match referee: Andy Pycroft (ZIM)
