A division bench of Lahore High Court here on Wednesday asked the Punjab government to explain why Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC) was not granted the status of university at the time when King Edward Medical College was given the same status.
The bench headed by Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif also extended stay against Punjab government's November 26 order under which FJMC was affiliated with University of Health Science (UHS) and adjourned hearing for April 8.
The CJ had taken Suo Motu notice of college's affiliation with UHS after the students had launched continuous protest against the move terming it a severe blow to their future. Previously, the court had sought minutes of meetings, which decided exemption to FJMC from affiliation with the UHS. Shahzad Shaukat, counsel for Punjab University said almost all the major medical colleges of country including Allama Iqbal Medical College and Quaid-e-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur had already been affiliated with the UHS.
