Sterling nears $1.30, hits highest in almost 8 months

LONDON: Sterling rose to trade less than a tenth of a cent away from $1.30 on Wednesday, hitting its highest level in almost eight months against a dollar weakened by worries that US President Donald Trump could face the threat of impeachment.

As the greenback fell across the board and safe-haven currencies soared, Britain's pound climbed 0.6 percent to trade as high as $1.2991, its strongest since Sept. 30.

It was flat against the euro but down 1.3 percent against the yen as the Japanese currency surged as worries over Trump dampened investors' appetite for risk.
