Heavy rains and flooding across South Korea have killed at least 11 people, left five missing and damaged hundreds of homes, officials said on Wednesday. Almost all the fatalities were in the south-western provinces of north and south Cholla, where 10 people had been confirmed dead, police said.
Some 200 mm (8 inches) of rain has fallen over the past day in areas in the provinces, flooding 12,225 hectares (30,000 acres) of rice fields and damaging 552 houses, police and meteorological officials said.
"The death toll and the amount of damage could likely rise since there are still areas we have not yet checked out," an official from the meteorological agency said by telephone.
