Two aid workers were wounded Sunday in an attack on their vehicle in southern Afghanistan where US military operations were also underway, local officials and the US military said. "Today at around 2:00 in the afternoon in Sangin district, a man riding a motorbike attacked an aid worker vehicle and wounded two people," Mohammed Wali, a spokesman for Helmand province, said without naming the organisation they worked for.
"Security forces, mainly local police, conducted an operation to pursue the attackers. Throughout the afternoon, 30 people have been detained for questioning for suspected links with the attack," he said.
In addition, "three Taleban regional commanders and four of their men were arrested" in Helmand's Nawzad district during a police operation, Wali said.
US military forces, which together with Afghan troops conduct operations against insurgents in the region, were not involved in the arrests, he said.
Coalition forces were Sunday conducting operations in another district of Helmand, US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jerry O'Hara told AFP, without giving further details.
