Pakistan's internal security threat has been "minimised" and the country was well on its way to progress and development as a result of "tough but prudent and pragmatic" decisions by the government, observed President Pervez Musharraf. He was speaking, following a presentation on national strategy paper titled "Internal Security Strategy", on Monday here at National Defence College. In his wide-ranging address, the President said necessary measures are being taken to ensure that the country's security situation remains stable and under control.
The objective was to have conducive and secure environment for economic progress and nation building, Musharraf said. He added the government was committed to have sustained economic growth through industrialisation and promoting agro-based economy.
The President said efforts are now in hand to reduce poverty, control inflation. This could help control "extremism and give voice to a wide majority who are mainly moderates", he observed.
Musharraf said the world was keenly watching Pakistan's internal security scene and expressed hope that the vast majority would reject "fringe elements of extremism and bring forth moderate, genuine and patriotic" leadership to serve them and the nation.
Earlier, the participants of National Defence Course presented a paper on the internal security strategy for Pakistan, which critically analysed the security environment along with comprehensive response strategy.
The President appreciated the quality of national strategy paper and said he was pleased that curricula profile of National Defence College was keeping pace with the changing environment. On arrival, the President was received by Commandant Lieutenant General Shahid Hameed and faculty members of the institution.
