imageToday marks the 19th death anniversary of the legendary qawwali maestro Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan. The Pakistani singer was one of the most renowned Sufi singers in the world. He was also popularly known as the ‘Shahanshah-e-Qawwali’ or ‘King of the Kings of Qawwal’.

Khan was born on October 13, 1948. He sang with many international artistes. He was the great bearer of the Qawwali tradidition. The most significant of his generation and at the same time a great innovator.

The Pakistan government had awarded him with ‘Pride of Performance’ for his splendid work in the field of music. The legendary Qawwal died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 49 on August 16, 1997, at the peak of his career.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice was not dependent on words in order to get heard and appreciated, his voice was self-sufficing ones, upon which words cease to exist, the unsurpassed ones. He explored a new and daring contemporary musical language, which made people around the world scream in joy.

His songs are still alive among his fans and also youngsters. Some of his most famous songs include 'Kinna Sohna Tainu', 'Piya Re Piya Re', 'Gham Hai Ya Khushi', 'Mera Piya Ghar Aaya', 'Dum Mast Qalander', 'Afreen Afreen' and many others.

Today, qawwali owes its international recognition solely to him.
