The Egyptian government is interested in the possibility of importing British wheat, Supply Minister Hassan Khidr said on Saturday.
Egypt is one of the world's biggest wheat importers, buying between six and seven million tonnes a year from abroad, mostly from the United States and Australia.
Before leaving for London on Saturday, Khidr told reporters at Cairo airport he would meet the official in charge of British wheat exports to discuss the possibility of British supplies. Britain's agriculture ministry estimated last month that the country would have an exportable wheat surplus of about 2.6 million tonnes in the year to the end of June.
