Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Friday announced duty free import of all medicines related to heart diseases.
He was speaking at the inaugural session of a three-day international conference on Cardiac-electro Physiology here at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC).
The Prime Minister said the government was making serious efforts to bridge the gap between the rich and poor, particularly in the area of medical education.
He said it is a matter of great satisfaction that countrymen are pursuing latest technology in the field of science. It is all the more gratifying when these efforts are directed towards alleviation of pain, disease and suffering, he added.
Jamali said provision of basic health facilities is a basic duty of the government and the fundamental right of every citizen.
He said the conference would be taking cognisance of actual problems being faced by the people and the role that our specialists, doctors and other medical personnel can play to meet the challenges involved.
He said the conference will also help to create awareness about latest trends and progress in cardiology and inspire young doctors specialising in the subject to take the initiative for pursuit of further knowledge and excellence.
The Prime Minister also announced an allocation of Rs 75 million for the AFIC, besides Rs 50 million for the purchase of the equipment.
He said medical relief to the people is possible only in the context of an efficiently functioning and viable health system.
Jamali said doctors, drugs and technology are vital ingredients of a health system, but the health system itself does not function in a vacuum and it must answer to the needs of the general population.
"Our government will work for providing an effective response to basic issues like infant, child and maternal mortality, and diseases that are common among the populace, especially the poor and the vulnerable sections of the community."
He said our government has taken numerous measures for accelerating the development process and to ensure through it greater employment and income generating opportunities for the common man within the community and abroad.
The Prime Minister hoped that the health sector would continue to engage the attention of medical experts in conferences like this one.
Appreciating AFIC's role, the Prime Minister said Brig. Azhar Kiyani has always been a source of information for me about cardiac problems and the role which AFIC has been paying in curing various heart related disorders.
