"The President has asked the provincial assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan to vote according to their conscience and above all keep in mind the interests of the country."
"What vote?"
"Ah, I note one thing in common that you have with the State Bank head."
"What?"
"You are both sleeping beauties - he missed a plane because he slept on and you seem to be clueless about the most important political event that this country has witnessed since...since..."
"Since last year's general elections?"
"Nah, that was a farce - I mean our general elections are mostly in that category - people know who is going to win in advance."
"But the generals were astounded when the Maulanas won."
"They were led to believe by the erstwhile Nawalas now turned pro-Musharrafites that their only threat was from the Jiyalas - see it is this mind set that the Jiyalas and Nawalas have for each other - can't live with each other, can't think of anyone else on the same bed either."
"What bed?"
"The bed of politics."
"I think you should be extremely careful in your imagery - I mean don't forget you are in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan."
"Ah, yes indeed."
"Going back to what the President exhorted the assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan to do, did he make the same appeal to Punjab?"
"Hell no - one of the Chaudhary's is installed there and there is no threat of Musharraf not getting the vote he wants from there. But to be fair to the President, he was addressing legislators from the two provinces and therefore they got the lecture."
"So to vote right is to vote for Musharraf."
"Yes, and if you have a conscience and want to vote for Pakistan's interests, then too Musharraf is the man."
"I thought Musharraf was the only man for the post. Why canvass?"
"You know this democracy! Forces one to ask those people for favours one wouldn't ordinarily allow entry to one's office."
"Ah, yes new and improved democracy or the old one - requires some sacrifices. And for the good of Pakistan, the President is making them."
