KARACHI: The Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah has directed Works & Services Department to ensure timely completion of 40 different road development schemes, spread over an area of 881 kilometers across the province.
Presiding over a meeting of Works and Services Department at CM House Monday, he said the schemes meant for each district headquarters in the province, worth over Rs.10 billion, must be completed by end of the current year.
He also asked the concerned officials to ensure that a comprehensive study related to environmental impact, also an essential requirement is necessarily undertaken.
The meeting among others was also attended by Minister for Works and Services Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, Minister for Finance, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Secretary Siddiq Memon, Additional Secretary (Development) Mohammad Waseem, Secretary Finance Sohail Rajput and other concerned officers.
Secretary for Works and Services, Syed Mumtaz Shah briefing the chief minister said that 314 schemes related to road sector would be completed by the end of next financial year.
"This would create an impressive impact on the development of the province," he said and added that 40 schemes of road sector are near completion.
Giving details of the near completion schemes the Secretary Works & Services said that they are of renovation, widening, redesigning and construction of new roads in six districts such as Sanghar, Benazirabad, Dadu, Badin, Jamshoro, Mirpurkhas, Naushehroferoze, Shikarpur and Sukhur.
The chief minister directed the secretary Works & Services to ensure their completion by end of on-going financial year.
"Finance department must release their funds so that these schemes could be completed," he directed the finance minister.
The Minister for Works & Services, Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani briefing the chief minister said that from the next financial year a $200 million Asian Development Bank (ADP) mega scheme would be launched to construct 328 kilometers long six of districts, Jacobabad, Kandhkot, Larkana, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas and Badin.
Under the same scheme 25 Year Sindh road sector Master Plan would be prepared keeping in view traffic data and growing population trend.
Apart from it, he said the engineers would also be given training of new construction techniques.
Minister and Secretary for Works and Services department requested the chief minister to increase allocation by two-fold for the department so that 314 schemes of 2700 kilometers roads could be completed next year.
Minister for Finance, Syed Murad Ali Shah told the meeting that the allocation of Works & services for the current financial year was Rs. 9.7 billion.
Yet Rs. 10.797 billion has been released in view of the importance of road sector he said mentioning that the allocation may be further increased during next financial year provided the Chief Minister approves the proposal.
CM Syed Qaim Ali said funds could be increased but without any compromise to the relevance of other development sectors.
" I want to given 10 kilometer road scheme to each district headquarters and five kilometer road scheme to taluka headquarters," he said.
Mentioning that this was an extremely important scheme, however, would be launched after conducting a proper survey.
Each of these roads would have parallel storm water drain and will be launched with foreign funding, said the chief minister reminding that strict criterion is adopted in application of such funds.
