imageBERLIN: Former world ski jumping champion Anders Bardal fractured his wrist on Thursday when he fell heavily during qualifying for a World Cup event in Wisla, Poland.

The 32-year-old Norwegian, who won the normal hill world title in 2013, crashed after a jump of 140m and was immediately transported to hospital where the fracture was diagnosed.

"Of course it could have been worse and it's a shame but I'll be back." said the double Olympic bronze medallist who is 13th in the World Cup rankings.

The start of the World Cup season has been marred by crashes, notably four-time champion Simon Ammann, who suffered severe concussion after a horror fall during the last leg of the Four Hills Tournament in January at Bischofshofen, Austria.
