imageKARACHI: Two thousand, four hundred and forty retailers were fined of more than Rs.4.4 million for violating the official price list and fleecing unassuming consumers in Karachi during November 2014.

These 2,440 profiteers were besides 54 others arrested for being repeatedly involved in the crime and attempting to hoodwink the Karachi Commissioner Office engaged in a campaign against profiteers, adulterators and hoarders in the cosmopolitan.

As per directives of the Sindh Chief Minister, Additional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Mukhtiarkars in close coordination with city police are actively engaged to protect the consumers rights, with specific reference to quality, afford-ability and easy availability of wide range of food items.

The profiteers fined in last month included 1177 milk sellers - challaned of Rs.23,9600. A fine of Rs.1,67,500 was imposed on 172 fruit vendors; 228 green grocers were fined of Rs.2,25,200; 10 meat sellers were fined of Rs.38,500; 473 grocers of Rs.5,26,000; 317 chicken sellers of Rs.5,26,000 and 51 flour millers of Rs.43,500 respectively.

Administrators of two different bachat bazaars were also arrested last month. They were also fined of Rs.40,000 for violating the rules and regulations related to manage the facility meant to benefit public.
