imageKARACHI: Sindh Minister for Food and Health, Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar here on Friday said the matter related to polio cases is not Sindh specific but is a national issue.

Talking to media on the premises of Sindh Assembly building this morning, he said the province has reported 23 cases this year, and 21 pertain to Karachi only.

This is a city that is exposed to steady influx of floating population, said Dahar.

In the given situation the minister said that entire country has to take the responsibility in handling the situation.

"As for provincial government we on regular basis are holding special vaccination campaigns in high risk areas so much so that in some super high risk areas additional dosages are administered to kids on almost weekly basis," said Sindh Minister for Health.

To help Sindh is ultimately enabling Pakistan in larger context, to achieve polio free status, all stake holders including local administration, population welfare, education, social welfare departments, WHO, Unicef, Rotary etc are being engaged.

The Health Minister said the population of Karachi has exceeded 18 million estimate, and is believed to be around 20 million with no less than 2.4 million under five children, living in its 188 union councils.

About the recently concluded National Immunization Days in Sindh, the minister said 294230 children from 45 union councils in Larkana,, 218103 from Jacobabad, 595341 children from Jamshoro, 147158 kids from Tando Allahyar, 170843 children from Ghotki, 311794 children from Hyderabad, 216746 from Kashmore and 526500 from Karachi were administered OPV.
