KARACHI: Sindh Food Department is in fast process to complete construction of 767 concrete procurement platforms enhancing its wheat storage capacity to minimum 10,00,000 metric tones at any given time, said Jam Mehtab Hussain Dharki, provincial minister for food.
Chairing a meeting in his office Wednesday, he said 221 of these platforms have already been completed, under development work initiated by the department while 546 are near completion.
"Once all these procurement platforms are completed we would be able to store 10,33,800 metric tones of the wheat grown in the province," said the minister.
Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar said the provincial food department would manage to save an annual expenditure of Rs 15 million incurred under head of rent as the storage facility previously had to be hired.
"Sindh food department has also saved Rs.117.930 million spent on procurement and supply of wheat," said the minister.
"The food department is supplying wheat to 73 flour mills in Karachi, 28 in Hyderabad, 47 in Sukkur, 15 in Mirpurkhas and 14 in Larkana," he added mentioning that 2421 flour mills are also being provided with the produce.
He said as per its commitment Pakistan Peoples Party has adopted special measures for food safety alongwith required development work in different sectors.
