imageLOS ANGELES: Esai Morales, known for playing Tony Rodriguez on the long-running series "NYPD Blue," says he will work hard for screen doubles and extras if elected the first Hispanic to lead the Screen Actors' Guild.

Morales, 50, is running against Ken Howard, in a race for a five-year term with the winner to be announced August 15.

He said he would seek a better deal for lower profile actors, trying to put right abuses such as extras being manipulated and pushed to pay big sums of money to directors or agencies who cash in on their desperation to get a role that they think will get them their big industry break.

Morales, whose family originally came from Puerto Rico to New York, would be the first Hispanic to lead the union which has been led by stars such as Ronald Reagan, Charlton Heston and Melissa Gilbert.
