Tribute to Prince

KARACHI: The massive catalog of musical creations by Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe award-winner Prince was explored in a tribute concert to the musician at Carnegie Hall this Thursday. The event named “The Music of Prince” attempted to portray all of Prince’s work, starting with his breakthrough album “For You” in 1978 to all his following music from pop and rock to spirituality and partying.

Produced by Michael Dorf, owner of City Winery, to raise funds for music programs for underprivileged children, the concert was all-things Prince, even his dance moves.

With The Roots as a house band, more than 20 performers from around the globe gathered to pay tribute to the icon, including Elvis Costello, Bettye LaVette, Bilal, Sandra Bernhard and the British band Waterboys. Among the best were Costello, who sang Prince’s “Moonbeam Levels,” and Waterboys who performed his “Purple Rain”.

There were also a few comedy acts, especially Chris Rock and Fred Armisen’s parody of Prince’s spoken words, guaranteed to tickle the funny bone.

D’Angelo rocked the stage at the finale with his microphone tricks for “It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night”. While The Roots belted Prince’s funky grooves, D’Angelo howled and whooped on just the right notes and rounded up the whole lineup during “1999.” This climax to the two-hour tribute left the crowd as energized as a Prince concert might have.
