Pakistan is likely to give access to British investigation authorities to three main suspects in the murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founding leader Dr Imran Farooq. Sources in Ministry of Interior said that Pakistan and UK authorities have held backchannel dialogue regarding access to key suspects in Dr Imran Farooq's murder and the Pakistan may give access to UK investigation authorities.
They said that the two suspects - Mohsin Ali Syed and Kashif Ali - were taken into custody immediately after they landed at Karachi Airport from Sri Lanka but their arrests were not given legal cover due to which authorities claim that there is no record that these suspects were taken into custody.
Sources further said that following investigation of the two suspects, security agencies arrested Khalid Shamim from Karachi. The sources said that British authorities believe that the murder of Dr Imran Farooq had been committed by the two posing as students in England who escaped from UK to South Africa and then to Sri Lanka after committing the murder.
Sources said that no legal cover has been given to the arrest of the two suspects as under the law, only police or Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) can make the arrest. One of the suspects, Kashif Ali, reportedly died during custody. The law enforcement agencies in April this year arrested another key suspect Moazzam Ali from Karachi, who is said to be facilitator of the two accused killers of Dr Imran Farooq.
However, Beena Khalid, the wife of Khalid Shamim, one of the suspects, moved the Sindh High Court and adopted the stance that her husband was whisked away in two cars by security officials on the night of January 5, 2011. At the time of the incident, he was getting money from an ATM in Malir Halt area of Karachi while his family was sitting in the car, waiting for his return which has further complicated the case.
