Naqvi meets PM before departure to Iran

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is in Tehran with a special message from Pakistan's Army Chief, seeking to mediate between Iran and the United States.

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi left for Tehran on Saturday after holding consultations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior officials, as the visit is being viewed as an effort to help revive the stalled talks between Iran and the United States.

Naqvi returned to Pakistan on Saturday after attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where he held a series of meetings with regional leaders and officials.

According to sources, the interior minister departed for Tehran after briefing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on his engagements on the sidelines of the SCO conference and discussing matters related to his visit to Iran.

Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, citing informed sources, reported that Naqvi is carrying a special message from Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir for Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

On the sidelines of the SCO conference in Bishkek, Naqvi held three meetings with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, during which bilateral and regional issues were discussed.

According to an official statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the interior minister also reviewed matters relating to the latter’s Tehran visit during their meeting. The prime minister provided guidance regarding the visit and discussed regional developments

The meeting also reviewed the country’s overall law and order and security situation. Naqvi briefed the prime minister on measures being taken to maintain public order and ensure the protection of citizens.

The prime minister stressed the need for close coordination among all relevant institutions and called for a unified strategy to further strengthen law and order and national security.
