Field Marshal Asim Munir’s Iran visit ‘highly productive’: ISPR

Published Updated

ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir concluded a short but “highly productive” official visit to Iran on Friday, where he held a series of high-level meetings with the Iranian leadership as part of ongoing mediation efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and advancing consultations following the April 8 ceasefire.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni during the visit.

The discussions focused on expediting the ongoing consultative process to support regional peace and stability and move towards what officials described as a “conclusive agreement.”

The ISPR said the engagements were held in a “positive and constructive environment” and contributed meaningfully to the mediation process. “The intensive negotiations over the last twenty-four hours have resulted in encouraging progress towards a final understanding,” the statement said.

The Iranian leadership appreciated Pakistan’s “sincere and constructive role” in facilitating dialogue and promoting a peaceful settlement of regional issues, according to the ISPR.

Upon his arrival in Tehran, Field Marshal Asim Munir was received by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni along with senior civil and military officials.

The visit follows the CDF’s three-day trip to Iran last month alongside Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, during which he met Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials. The ISPR had described those engagements as part of ongoing mediation efforts aimed at supporting de-escalation between Iran and the United States.

Diplomatic sources said Pakistan continues to facilitate contacts between Tehran and Washington despite major differences over Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and regional security issues.
