SPI witnesses slight decline

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) for the week ended on January 22, 2026 has witnessed a decline of 0.48percent owing to major decrease in the prices of chicken by 16.68percent, potatoes 8.52percent, onions 7.27percent, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) 3.54percent, salt powder 1.52 percent, gur 1percent, vegetable ghee 2.5Kg 0.87percent, cooking oil 5 Litre 0.53percent, pulse masoor 0.27percent and cigarettes 0.11percent.

The SPI related data released here on Friday by Pakistan Bureau of Statistic (PBS) said that during the week under review prices of the following items witnessed an increase: Tomatoes 9.83percent, bananas 3.66percent, wheat flour 2.27percent, eggs 1.02percent, firewood 0.56percent, pulse mash 0.53percent, pulse moong 0.43percent, pulse gram 0.16percent and sugar 0.14percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 12 items which is 23.53percent of the basket witnessed an increase, price of 11 items which is 21.57percent of the basket witnessed a reduction and prices of 28 items which is 54.90percent of the basket remained stable.

According to PBS data the Year on Year (YoY) trend depicts an increase of 4.18percent. Major increase is observed in the prices Wheat Flour 38.60percent, eggs 35.99percent, gas charges for Q1 by 29.85percent, beef 12.75percent, chillies powder 12.56percent, firewood 10.83percent, tomatoes 10.02percent, bananas 9.94percent, powdered milk 9.79percent, gur 9.42percent, and lawn printed 8.29percent and shirting 8.22percent.

As per PBS on YoY basis a decrease was observed in the prices of Potatoes 47.26percent, garlic 36.28percent, onions 35.55percent, pulse gram 29.79percent, tea Lipton 17.79percent, chicken 16.79percent, pulse mash 12.57percent, pulse masoor 9.75percent, diesel 1.27percent and petrol 0.95percent.

The SPI for consumption groups up to Rs17,732 with a reduction of 0.30percent recorded at 324.30 against 325.28 points in the previous week. The SPI for consumption group of Rs17,732 to 22,888 witnessed a reduction of 0.37percent was recorded at 324.65 points against 325.84 points registered in the past week. Whereas the SPI for the income group Rs22,889-29,517 with a reduction of 0.39percent was recorded at 346.38 points against 347.73 points of previous week. The SPI for the income group Rs29,518-44,175 with a reduction of 0.45percent was recorded at 333.16 points against 334.68 points of the previous week and SPI for the monthly income group above Rs44,175 witnessed a decline of 0.54percent was recorded at 333.10 points against 333.60 points registered in previous week.

The combined increase for all expenditure groups recorded at 333.60 points against 335.20 points calculated in the previous week, which reflect a weekly reduction of 0.48percent.
