imageCARACAS: Venezuela's opposition has called a 12-hour general strike for Friday as it seeks to up the pressure on President Nicolas Maduro, who is fighting efforts to drive him from power.

Jesus Torrealba, secretary general of the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), announced the strike plan at an anti-Maduro protest in the capital Wednesday.

The opposition also vowed to use its legislative majority to declare the leftist leader has "abandoned his post" and deliver the ruling to the presidential palace in a new mass march on November 3.
