I was deeply saddened by the events that have surfaced during the past week. The treatment meted out to Dr Qadeer Khan seems unfair. He was one of the heroes of Pakistan, who was responsible for providing it with security.
He chose to return to his country and work here when he could have made millions more abroad. How many of those pointing a finger at him would have chosen to return if they had a choice. What if he accumulated a large fortune. How many others have also done so.
At least he accumulated wealth while doing the country good unlike most others who bleed it dry while feathering their own nests. Rather than standing up for him we have chosen to sell him for the sake of foreign or American interests.
Firstly, so what if he sold technology to other countries, mostly Muslims. Isn't it a Muslim's duty to help other Muslims? Besides as a sovereign country isn't it our right to sell nuclear technology to whoever we think fit? Allies or enemies or North Korea? Why should anyone be held accountable for it?
What a certain power does not want, is that, no other country should have the technology to counter its power. We Pakistanis have played into its hands by humiliating Dr Qadeer Khan. Now no scientist will wish to remain here to work for the country.
Most will leave for Western countries where they will be awarded and appreciated and provided security. We will become even weaker and dependent.
