imageISLAMABAD: The Upper House of the Parliament Monday passed The National University of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2015). The Bill was jointly moved by Senators Farhat Ullah Babar and Atta ur Rehman.

According to statement of objects and reasons of the bill, The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) is a body formed under an Act of the Parliament and responsible for the crucial oversight role in medical education including prescribing a uniform minimum standard of courses, conditions of admission and minimum qualification and experience required of teaches for appointments in any institution for imparting medical education whether in the public or private sector.

These multifarious roles of the PMDC have been laid down in the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Ordinance, 1962 amended from time to time, the last amendment made in August, 2015.

It is imperative that the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) being a university of medical education in the public in the public sector should also submit to the oversight and guidance role of PMDC.

Not doing so will not only be a violation of the norm, practice and obligation but also send a wrong message that is best avoided.

The House also passed a resolution of Senator Azam Khan Swati about appointment of administrator for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science, Islamabad. The House passed another resolution of Senator Usman Kakar regarding extension in Prime Minister's Scheme for provision of opportunities of quality education to the talented students of Balochistan and FATA.

The House however, rejected a resolution of Tahir Hussain Mashhadi that government should take immediate steps to discontinue the facility of provision of free of cost electricity to the WAPDA's employees.
