LAHORE: There is a dire need to make South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) effective for the promotion of ties among South Asian countries.

Former caretaker Punjab chief minister Hasan Askari Rizvi said this while addressing an international conference on "Democracy, Governance and Security in South Asia" organized by Political Science department of the University of Punjab here Wednesday.

He said China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would economically join the countries of the region.

He said in the 21st century technology had become important to resolve governance related problems, adding that roads, railways and pipelines were also very significant for the development of countries in the region.

He stressed the need for developing alliance with the international relations and the governments should focus on resolving social and economic problems.

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri said that security and peace was dependent on Pakistan and India relationships.

Kashmir issue could only be resolved through dialogue, he added.

Other speakers also spoke on the occasion.
