  • The dollar index against a basket of currencies was last down 0.26% on the day at 92.013. The euro gained 0.27% to $1.1901 and the greenback gained 0.05% to 110.30 Japanese yen.
  • The British pound gained 0.69% to $1.3885.

Canada's National Bank beats profit forecasts with lower provisions, lending growth

  • The smallest of Canada's six big banks took provisions on credit losses of C$5 million ($4.1 million), versus analysts' estimates of C$81 million. This included the release of C$62 million previously set aside for performing loans that could have soured.
  • Shares in National Bank fell 2.9% to C$94.19, after earlier touching a record high, while the Toronto benchmark rose 0.4%.

  • The company, which rents out equipment to the construction and industrial sectors, generated a record 1.06 billion pounds in free cash flow in the nine months to January.
  • It used that cash to reduce its 4.28 billion pound net debt, a move that is expected to help it meet its leverage target range by the end of this month.

Inter Pipeline to get $325mn cash grant to develop petrochemical complex

  • The incentive comes as Inter is in the middle of a takeover battle with Investment firm Brookfield Infrastructure Partners , which launched a hostile C$7.1 billion bid for the pipeline operator in February.
  • The cash grant will be paid to Inter Pipeline in equal installments over three years once the Heartland Petrochemical Complex is operational, the company said.
