(Karachi) United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres has said that the world is paying a heavy price for countries ignoring the recommendations of the World Health Organization to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing a virtual meeting of the WHO’s World Health Assembly on Monday, he said: "Different countries have followed different, sometimes contradictory strategies and we are all paying a heavy price."

He, however, did not specify which countries he was referring to.

The novel coronavirus which first emerged in the central China city of Wuhan in 2019 was declared a global pandemic by WHO. Though the deadly disease was controlled in China, the virus spread across 202 countries across the world.

At least more than a million people got infected with the virus in April while the number trippled by the end of the month. In May, over four million people were infected across the globe while more than 279,000 lives have been lost.
