Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday issued notices to provincial authorities on a petition, filed against the arrest of drivers for wrong way driving.

A division bench of SHC comprising Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Irshad Ali Shah issued notices to Advocate General, Prosecutor General, Chief Secretary, IGP, DIG traffic Karachi on a constitutional petition filed by Pasban Democratic Party Chairman Altaf Shakoor against arrest of drivers for wrong way driving.

According to Irfan Aziz Advocate, counsel for petitioner maintained that police were arresting drivers and commuters on alleged violation of traffic rules and arresting them and lodging FIRs against them, besides getting heavy fines.

He submitted in the court that Traffic Police have forcibly challaned 4765 persons and imposed fine of Rs 11,46,650 and Traffic Police Karachi also handed over 163 persons to the relevant police stations and lodged FIRs against them.

The petitioner prayed the court to declare the act of registration of the FIRs under Section 279 PPC against the citizens/commuters null and void.
