Defending the IG Sindh Dr Kaleem Imam, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice President and parliamentary party leader in Sindh assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh on Thursday said the Sindh government has started a poisonous disinformation drive against the provincial police department.

He said if the present IGP Sindh is removed, there would be no one to stop the lawlessness of the ruling quarters in the province.

Addressing a press conference at the Insaf House, flanked by opposition leader in Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi, and others, he said a series of allegations is being levelled against Sindh police. It seems that only police department is corrupt in Sindh, while all other departments are honest, pure and clean.

He reminded that just three days back, the Sindh chief minister had claimed that Karachi is a safe city.

Adil said in 2008 two tenures were given to Babar Khattak and Fayaz Laghari. He alleged that a gang war was patronised and promoted in Karachi from 2008 to 2013, while the PPP was in government. When target killings and ransom crimes were at their peak in Karachi, the rulers did not blame IGPs of Sindh. He said Ghulam Haider Jamali also became IGP Sindh and corruption marred the Sindh police, but he was not removed.

A D Khuwaja was removed because he was honest and competent officer. He said Kaleem Imam is the best police officer with exemplary performance but the rulers of Sindh want an IGP who works like their slave.

Haleem Adil said that Rs one billion was earmarked to purchase arms and ammunition for police but only Rs 25 million was spent. He said Sindh government does not provide funds to the police but generously level allegations.

He said now a police officer is being removed who is about to retire in seven months. He suggested the Sindh government to dare appointing honest and direful officers like A D Khuwaja or Aftab Pathan as IGP Sindh. He said no consultation of provincial government is necessary with the federal government for posting of IGP.

He asked when AIDS spread in Sindh why the provincial health minister was not removed.

He said when people were bitten by stray dogs no departmental action was taken. There are no facilities in government schools. Huge corruption is being done in privatisation of sugar mills and wheat procurement, but no action is being initiated against the corrupt elements.
