Ramy Youssef says ‘Allahu Akbar’ in his acceptance speech at Golden Globe 2020

• Ramy Youssef thanked God and said ‘Allahu Akhbar’ while accepting his first ever Golden Globe award.
• During his brief acceptance speech, Youssef also joked about being relatively unknown compared to some of his fellow nominees.

Arab-American actor Ramy Youssef won Golden Globe ‘Best Actor’ award for his performance in comedy series ‘Ramy’ and when he took the stage for the acceptance of the award, the actor thanked God and said ‘Allahu Akhbar’.

In ‘Ramy’, Youssef portrayed a first-generation Arab Muslim American, who deals with the many stereotypes he has to face in America.

During his brief acceptance speech, Youssef joked about being relatively unknown compared to some of his fellow nominees.

He said, “Allah-uh-Akhbar. This is thanks to God and Hulu. Look, I know you guys haven’t seen my show. Everyone’s like, ‘Is this an editor?’ We made a very specific show about an Arab Muslim family living in New Jersey, and this means a lot to be recognized on this level”.

The phrase ‘Allahu akbar’ is a common but an important phrase among Muslims across the world. However, this phrase has been butchered through history and associated with radicalism and has been politicized.

After winning the award, Youssef also told reporters backstage, “I’m very thankful to God, and my show is about someone who believes in their faith, so I naturally don’t always feel like I’m on the same page with the comedic styles of Ricky Gervais on that subject.”
