  • The controversy has also helped to promote the short film as it is now the most viewed Brazilian production on Netflix.
  • The film has angered fans, who have set up a petition on charge.org. demanding the streaming giant to ban the film.

Released on December 3, the latest satirical film on Netflix ‘First Temptation of Christ’ has created outrage amongst Muslims and Christians for its not only controversial but rather allegedly blasphemous content.

The 46-minute-long special features Mary and Joseph organizing a surprise party for Jesus’ 30th birthday, where a gay Jesus Christ introduces his boyfriend, Orlando, to his family and God after spending 40 days in the desert. Orlando tries his best to explain to Jesus’ family that they are in a relationship.

Jesus interrupts each time because he is ashamed about his sexuality and he is not sure to be the savior of humanity.

The film has left fans angered who have set up a petition on charge.org. The petition, so far signed by over one million people, demands the streaming giant to ban the film.

The short film is the product of Brazilian comedy troupe Porta dos Fundos (Backdoor), who began sharing their satirical videos through their You Tube channel in 2012.

On facing severe criticisms from different religious groups, Fundos co-founder Fábio Porchat told Variety on Monday that Netflix and Viacom, which took a majority stake in Porta dos Fundos in 2017, are standing by the special. “It doesn’t incite violence, we’re not saying people shouldn’t believe in God.”

“They [Netflix] haven’t said anything to us like, ‘Maybe we should stop making the special available.’ They support freedom of speech,” Porchat said.

Ironically, the controversy has also helped to promote the short film. It has now become the most viewed Brazilian production in the history of Netflix.
