Review: ‘Captain Marvel’ might disappoint anyone expecting a lot

Marvel’s most powerful superhero film ‘Captain Marvel’ played by Brie Larson has just hit theatres and as per the early reviews the film seems to be overhyped.

‘Captain Marvel’ is enjoyable and robust entrant in Marvel cinematic universe, although it's a long way for Larson to prove herself as the strongest superhero. Set in 1995, Captain Marvel a.k.a Carol Danvers imbued with the powers, including superhuman strength, energy projection, and flight. On the planet Hala, home of the Kree Empire, Carol trains as a member of Starforce, an elite intergalactic military team led by commander Yon-Rogg (Jude Law).

As Carol begins to realize her true potential, she finds herself back on Earth where she lands on the radar of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). Together, they must unite against a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls – shape-shifting aliens—and their leader, Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who is spearheading an invasion of Earth.

Fans have also been comparing the film with Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman’, whose story of a woman finding power in a man’s world spoke to an audience beyond fans of comics-based movies. Brie Larson has given a powerful performance as ‘Captain Marvel’ but it is nowhere close to ‘Wonder Women’ as it takes for granted that women can be tough and take charge.

However, she will be a central character in an upcoming Avengers film. Let’s see how crucial she may be in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ which opens next month.
