Two more cases of polio have been surfaced in Bannu district on Monday taking the total in the district to 16 and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 33 this year. Officials of the KP Polio Emergency Operation Centre stated that both the victims are aged between one and five years. They said that the Peshawar incident in April had increased the risk of children contracting the poliovirus in the province.
In April, protesters burnt down a health facility in Peshawar following reports that multiple children had fallen sick after being administered anti-polio vaccine. The protest was triggered by hearsay as medics at Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital, where most of the children were taken, said that an overwhelming majority of them were fine.
Chairing an emergency meeting here on Monday, the Emergency Operation Centre KP after surfacing of fresh cases in district Bannu, the EOC coordinator Captain Kamran Ahmad Afridi (R) directed the launching of case response campaign in the affected district and completion of all arrangements immediately. The official informed that a comprehensive strategy has been devised after reporting of fresh cases in different districts of KP to cope with the situation.
According to scheduled, he added the anti-polio campaigns will begin in different phases from 15 to 18 July, 26 to 29 August, and 16 to 19 September in final phase. Captain Kamran Afridi (r) said the fresh cases are being reported to inaccessibility to anti-polio campaign. Therefore, he urged the parents to ensure vaccination to their children to prevent from life time disability and don't be part of negative propaganda in order to make the KP polio free forever.
