Pakistan has re-elected with the highest number of votes as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC). Talking to media persons, Pakistan's representative to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi said in secret balloting in the 54-member council, Pakistan secured 48 votes to retain its seat on 18-member Commission on Narcotic Drugs for four year term beginning from 1st January 2020.
She said Pakistan has served the commission continuously since 2008, assisting the United Nations in supervising the application of international drug control treaties. Dr Maleeha Lodhi said it is recognition of Pakistan's positive contribution to the work of the world body.
