Qadirpur Loop Bund: Federal-funded project in Sindh will protect national assets
A recently approved federal-funded project in Sindh will protect national assets including gas filed, power plants, cantonment areas and highways from the onslaught of flood.
Project titled "Providing Stone Pitching & Stone Apron along Qadirpur Loop Bund" in district Ghotki has been approved by the federal government at the cost of over Rs 202 million.
The federal government will finance the project wholly from its own resources with Sindh Irrigation & Drainage Authority is the executing agency.
According to working paper of the project, it has been conceived by the Sindh Irrigation & Drainage Authority after the onslaught of Flood 2015 downstream of Guddu Barrage. This patch of protection work was identified to be corrected before a major flood event.
River course is running parallel along Qadirpur Loop Bund leaving nominal ordinates from mile 5/1 to 8/4, The portion of Bund from mile 4/6 to 7/2 has already stone pitched including stone pitching along inner slope of Bund. The downstream of project area, connecting with Qadirpur main Bund with mile 10/4, is already been provided with Stone pitching and apron. The unpitched reach of Bund from mile 7/2 to 8/4 has been proposed for stone pitching and Stone apron for safety of Qadirpur Loop Bund.
Working paper indicated that project would protect national assets including Cantonment situated in District Ghotki and Sukkur as well as National Highway, Pakistan Railway, gas field, power, plants sugar mills, oil mills etc from the flood.
Official documents identified risk of flood exists in the project area during the monsoon season and suggested that project activities have to be scheduled in a manner to avoid the risks of flood damages.
The project was considered by the Scrutinizing Committee of Federal Flood Commission in its meeting held on November 19, 2018. The technical viability of the project was discussed thoroughly.
