The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif have floated two more names for the slot of caretaker provincial chief minister following the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has also given four names in this regard amid confusion. The PML-N has earlier floated the names of former LHC Judge Justice Sair Ali and the former IGP Tariq Saleem Dogar but accepted the name of former Chief Secretary Punjab Nasir Khan Khosa proposed by the PTI. However, after the PTI's U-turn in the name of Nasir Khan Khosa, the matter of caretaker CM Punjab could not be finalised.
Now Shahbaz has proposed the names of former chief Pakistan Navy Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah and former DG Intelligence Bureau (IB) Aftab Sultan. Shahbaz is scheduled to hold a meeting with Mian Mahmood ur Rasheed today in which the name of one of the candidates floated by both the sides will be finalised for the caretaker CM Punjab. If Shahbaz and Rasheed do not reach a consensus, then the matter will be resolved by a parliamentary committee.
Sources claim that Shahbaz has put forward the above two names after discussion with the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a meeting of PML-N held at Model Town, Lahore. The meeting, which was chaired by Nawaz Sharif, was attended by Marriyam Aurangzeb, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Asif Kirmani, Rana Sanaullah and others. The meeting discussed in detail the country's current political situation and caretaker setup in the provinces, the sources said.
After the meeting, Marriyam Aurangzeb told media that the PTI has adopted 'ridiculous' approach on the issue of appointment of caretaker chief minister. It appears that Imran and his associates had not even gone through the Constitution, she said. She maintained that basic obligation of the caretaker government is to hold free, fair and impartial elections in time. She hoped that elections would be held on July 25.
Marriyum said the PML-N's narrative is to give respect to the vote as well as voters. To a query, she said that in the meeting held at Model Town, different issues including 5-year performance of the PML-N government, upcoming general elections and caretaker set up at provincial levels came under discussion. The participants of the meeting were of unanimous view that in time holding of general elections is necessary to take the country forward.
Addressing the meeting, Nawaz said the PML-N would accomplish its unfinished development agenda in addition to preserving the sanctity of vote after winning the 2018 general elections. He said people are aware that Pakistan was making progress by leaps and bounds when he was ousted which inflicted colossal loss to the national economy.
