Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar on Thursday asked anti-encroachment department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to remove encroachments in the city. He instructed the officials to remove those constructions, bus stops, shops, pushcarts, makeshift stalls which have been illegally set-up by vendors under flyovers and bridges in any part of the metropolis. He said anti-encroachment actions are being taken in compliance with the Supreme Court orders.
Waseem said the shops and other constructions without maintaining official documentations and maps at both sides of Nazimabad No-10, Goal Market would also be demolished. "Frere Market will be restored after its renovation as per the original plan under which this market was built in 1964. A plan has been designed to revamp the market," he said, taking to shopkeepers during his visit to the market on Thursday. He met with the shopkeepers and assured them that their problems would be solved.
The civic body with the help of law enforcement agencies had removed a number of illegal stalls, push-carts, and concrete encroachments around Empress Market and the busy Saddar neighbourhood of the metropolis since it began operation on May 20. Surveillance camps have been setup where police and KMC officials remain present to prevent the vendors from reoccupation.
