PESHAWAR: President Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Faiz Muhammad has demanded the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to supply electricity from Malakand Hydel Power and Pehur Hydro Power Projects on wheeling charges to industries of the province.

“Supply of uninterrupted and cheap electricity will help in reducing production cost besides allowing industries to operate with full capacity ensuing in increasing production and creation of employment opportunities,” Faiz added.    He expressed these views while speaking during visit of Himayatullah Mayar, Special Advisor on Energy in KP to SCCI here on Tuesday.

President SCCI said KP has the potential of generating around 30,000 MW of electricity but ironically previous governments have not given due consideration to this resource. He said the industrial consumption of electricity in KP is around 200 MW, but still these are not being provided uninterrupted power supply.

Electricity supply is a very important factor in industrial production and economic growth of the country, but it is unfortunate that cheap power resources are not been tapped and precious ones are installed resulting in supply of high cost electricity.

President SCCI said in CPEC electricity projects are included to the tune of dollar 34 billion, but still more such projects are needed to overcome electricity shortage.

He also suggested for inviting foreign investors to invest in hydel potential of the province besides upgradation of electricity wires.

Speaking on the occasion, Special Advisor on Energy, Himayatullah Mayar agreed with the view points of President SCCI.     He said provincial government is working over generation of cheap electricity and its supply to industries and domestic consumers as well.

He said KP has great potential of generating hydel power and provincial government is working over tapping of these resources.    He also assured SCCI President that provincial government will take business community on board and formulate energy and industrial related policies with their consultation.
