National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Karachi has recovered around Rs 1.739 billion while 6613 complaints have also been disposed of in 2016. This was stated by DG NAB Karachi Siraj ul Naeem at a seminar on "Role of State Institutions in Promoting Accountability", organised by NAB Karachi at Governor House Highlighting the performance of NAB Karachi, he said that in year 2016, 6613 were received and disposed off while around 200 inquiries and investigations were completed that led the recoveries of Rs 1.739 billion besides 126 arrests of various persons including govt officials.
Apart from monetary recoveries, NAB Karachi also recovered 125000 acres of land illegally allotted/occupied and was retrieved to Government of Sindh. He said that value of these lands is roughly more that Rs 7 trillion. DG NAB emphasised the role of investigation and said for securing good governance, preventive actions are as important as enforcement and that the government authorities responsible for spending public money will have to be more vigilant, honest and transparent. He said under charismatic Chairmanship of Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, NAB is enforcing Anti-Corruption Strategy specially awareness and prevention along with enforcement strategy.
Principal Secretary to Governor Sualeh Farooqi delivered message on behalf of the Governor Sindh. He said there was no choice but to root out the corruption which was possible by self-accountability, check and balance and adherence to law through public participation and with the help of society at large.
He congratulated DG NAB Siraj ul Naeem on being 5th recipient in world and first from Pakistan of the Integrity Award by Transparency International. He also appreciated performance of NAB Karachi in reducing the impact of corruption. Dr Farukh Iqbal Director, Dean IBA Karachi, Dr Waqas Qadeer Dar, Prosecutor General Accountability and Barrister Shahida Jamil also spoke on the occasion.
Chief Guest Barrister Shahida Jamil and DG NAB awarded appreciation certificates to the best performing Investigating Officers. Amount of Rs 303.933 million was distributed to various Federal and Provincial Government departments that were recovered by NAB Karachi in various corruption cases. Cheques were also distributed to various affecters of Kokan Muslim Co-operative Housing Society.
The seminar was attended by dignitaries from various fields including Barrister Shahida Jamil, Senator Tanvir ul Haq Thanvi, Chairman Anti Corruption Establishment Ghulam Qadir Thebo, Dr Farukh Iqbal, Director IBA, Sohail Muzaffar Chairman Transparency International Pakistan and Dr Tariq Mehmood in charge Cyber Knife JPMC hospital.
