Imran hints at relaunching protest

Published December 10, 2016 Updated December 10, 2016 12:00am

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Friday said that his party would not let the Panama leaks case die down, and would take to the streets if needed. "The production of evidence has nearly ended...we will not let this case be forgotten... it will not die down and we'll go the people if needed," he told a press conference after Supreme Court adjourned the Panama leaks case till next month.
About the formation of a commission to probe into Panama leaks case, he said the decision is up to the new chief justice, "but in our eyes, the time for that has passed." "We wished the current bench would wrap up the case as soon as possible. And this was the reason we wanted that the case was heard on a day-to-day basis," he added.
Addressing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, he warned: "I would like to tell you [Nawaz Sharif] that I'll not let this case be forgotten, and will bring you to the court to make it sure that the mighty is also answerable before the law". He expressed hope that after retirement of the Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, the same bench will proceed with the hearing of the case and there will be no commission.
Referring to the claims by the lawyers for prime minister that his statement in parliament was political, he said, "the time for these kind of political twists is over and now they should prove everything before the court." Imran also claimed that his party had obtained documents from International Consortium of International Journalists (ICIJ) which "shows" that Maryam Nawaz is a beneficiary, adding all the necessary documents have been submitted to the court.
PTI chairman accused the prime minister of making a fortune by coming into power and then sending the money to his children through hawala and hundi system. He congratulated Justice Saqib Nisar who is going to take over as new chief justice on January 01, 2017 after the retirement of incumbent chief justice. "I want to congratulate him in advance...let's see what he is going to do as there lies a big responsibility on his shoulders," he added.
