The Sindh High Court on Friday annulled delimitations of constituencies undertaken by Sindh government for upcoming local government elections and directed Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to revise the constituencies within five days. A bench of SHC, headed by chief justice Faisal Arab, gave its verdict in his chamber and it will be announced in writing later.
The court gave its verdict on several petitions through which Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) and others had challenged new delimitation work carried out in Sindh by the provincial government. Talking to media outside the court, MQM's counsel Farogh Naseem said that SHC has cancelled delimitations made by Sindh government and reversed urban and rural areas to their original positions.
He said that court observed that ECP is the proper authority to make delimitations, instead of the provincial government. The court directed the ECP to arrange all processes of upcoming local government elections. The petitioners submitted that Sindh government has mixed up constituencies of urban and rural areas with one other and the objective of these delimitations was to get political benefit in the local government election.
The petitioners have also submitted that it is the election commission's work to undertake delimitation works of the constituencies. They submitted that Sindh government has showed favouritism in making delimitations of constituencies which is violation of the constitution and Supreme Court's order. They had requested the court to declare the delimitation made by the provincial government in constituencies illegal and restrain the relevant authorities to conduct local government elections in these constituencies.
