Javed Qamar is a passionate artist. His love for calligraphy is evident in his detailed calligraphic artworks. His paintings have three dimension effects which he gained over the years by constantly developing new techniques. His inventive nature led him to innovative ideas that consequently gave his work more depth, meaning and maturity. And in a way he has created his own unique style to advance the tradition of calligraphy.
Splendidly carved and vivid his calligraphy style is antique; his alphabets in Arabic are very fine as compare to his contemporaries. Inspired by the 16th century and 17th century calligraphy art artworks that can be seen on the walls of ancient mosques and palaces of that era he embellishes his calligraphic works with beautiful flowers, geometric designs and antique patterns.
Calligraphy is a demanding art and consumes a lot of time of an artist and also involves passion for the art because without love of this art nobody can excel in calligraphy. Javed has been a calligraphic artist for about two decades and for three years he came to limelight because of his skills combined with hard work and passion. It is all about passion of art embedded in one's inner soul. Many advised him to use shortcut in his work like using stencils and screen printing but he never used such shortcuts as he believes in hard work and follow his passion. Many calligraphers nowadays are using these shortcuts and producing hundreds of artworks a year which later on became damage, their colours fade away and the silver and gold becomes black.
The aesthetic evolution of alphabets framed within the technical skills and material limitations of a person depending upon the style of writing the alphabets following a particular script results in an artistic and sensitive calligraphy which Javed follows.
He chooses the design and execution of lettering with brush or pen and draws the letters in particular style called Khat or script. Islamic calligraphy excelled due to the forms of Arabic letters, composed of dots, lines and curves. These attributes give the artist a freedom to create. The scripts are functional as well as artistic and graphic; therefore even those who do not understand the writing can enjoy the sight of it.
He uses different variations of Khat in his calligraphic works often combine illumination like gold or silver leaf to enhance the purity of his work. But he loves to use Kufi, Thuluth and Deewani scripts in his calligraphy.
Recently his calligraphy painting was auctioned in Dubai by ArtZest. The gallery brought an eclectic collection of some of the best in Art with works of artists of contemporary and modern art from the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East thus showcasing art representing diverse cultures.
Calligraphy is associated with geometric Islamic art on the walls and ceilings of mosques as well as on the Holy Book pages. That's why calligraphy for Muslims is a visible expression of the highest art of all, the art of the spiritual world and Javed feels the same whenever he do calligraphy painting.
He balances the composition thoughtfully. The symmetry in the compositions is remarkable. The Quranic verses along with the beauty of colour enhanced with the glitter of silver and gold leaf and splendour of Islamic motifs enrich his artwork to provide visual pleasure.
His calligraphic works show balance and proportion, rhythm and unity, which is the quality of a true calligrapher. He gives form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner while transcribing the Holy Qura'n in his calligraphic paintings. Javed uses various scripts in his own manner with bright colours but in some what complex and difficult style. His calligraphic works are highly mannered and excessively cursive and very much structured with its letters.
The intertwining of its letters from top to bottom punctuated and decorated to appear as one piece. The spaces between the letters are spangled with decorative devices.
In the sub-continent history there were many known calligraphers who worked with heart and soul in this art and helped in spreading it in the region and after going through the calligraphies of Javed it seems he is walking in their footsteps.
Javed has created a wealth of variety and develop endless patterns in writing in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner. In his calligraphy the alphabets are disciplined yet fluid and spontaneous.
His work is vivacious because of his strong gestured strokes and vibrant colours. His concept of beauty results in the manifestation of such works with bold colours in an esthetical manner. Recently his calligarphic works were among artists in a group exhibition at Ejaz Gallery, Lahore.
The works appear in various shapes, highlighted by Islamic motifs in bright colours such as red, orange, green, blue, ochre, cloudy white that are eye catching with the glitter of silver and gold leaf that enrich the artworks resulting in an artistic tradition of extraordinary beauty.
