Sikhs stage protest against Sunny Leone’s biopic

Indian Sikh community is miffed with Bollywood actress Sunny Leone for using her surname ‘Kaur’ in an upcoming biopic web series ‘Karenjit Kaur: the Untold Story’, which has led to protests by the community.

“We have no objection with her profession, it’s her personal life. Our only objection is simply that we want them to remove the surname ‘Kaur’ because when she herself had earlier dropped ‘Kaur’ from her name then why it is being used now?" said Manjinder Sirsa, a member of the Sikh community Akali Dal, while speaking to ANI.

“We have urged the Chairman of Essel Group, Subash Chandra, to immediately remove it or face the consequences,” Indian media quoted him saying. Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has joined Shiromani Gurdwara Pabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Istri Akali Dal in opposing Bollywood star Sunny Leone.

Speaking to Times of India, DSGMC general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that Kaur is a surname given to Sikh girls and women by the Guru. “To use it for a publicity stunt and to depict the porn life of a celebrity is derogatory for Sikhs all across the world”.  They have also warned the makers to change the title immediately or stop the premier of the biopic to avoid any severe consequences.

The web series will trace the journey of Sunny Leone, who was born as Karenjit Kaur Vohra, to Indian immigrants in Canada. It will show her struggles as a teenager and how the financial crisis in the family led her to become an adult movie star. The series will consist of two seasons with 10 episodes each. Season 1 premieres on July 16.
