KIEV: Ukraine has sharply increased injections of natural gas into underground storage, data from gas transport monopoly Ukrtransgas showed on Thursday.
Ukrtransgas injected about 56 million cubic metres (mcm) of gas into underground storage on May 1, up from 38 million a day earlier and 28 million on April 29.
The company gave no explanation for the increase but in May Ukraine usually starts storing gas for winter.
Stored gas stood at of 7.989 billion cubic metres (bcm) as of May 1.
Last year, Ukraine increased the volume of gas in storage by around 15 percent to about 16.8 bcm.
Ukraine, which previously bought gas from Russia, has been buying from European states since halting Russian imports in November 2015 following Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea.
