ISLAMABAD: Mohammad Zikria Akbar Zia took charge as president of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) on Wednesday, pledging his priority would be to represent the business community and pursue measures to resolve issues facing businesses.

Zia was sworn in at the chamber’s 42nd annual general meeting, along with senior vice president Mohammad Ashfaq Hussain Chatah and vice president Mohammad Waqas Khan.

“I will focus on effectively representing the business community and pursuing practical advocacy to resolve issues confronting businesses,” Zia said after taking the oath.

He said the chamber would continue to engage with government institutions on measures aimed at promoting investment, trade and entrepreneurship and supporting economic growth in Islamabad and the country.

Zia thanked the ICCI founder group and chamber members for placing their confidence in him and paid tribute to the outgoing leadership. He said the new team would build on its work while pursuing further initiatives.

Chatah and Waqas said they would work with Zia and the executive committee to promote and protect the interests of the business community.

Outgoing president Sardar Tahir Mehmood congratulated the new office-bearers and highlighted initiatives undertaken during his tenure.

Sheikh Tariq Sadiq, chairman of the ICCI founder group, who administered the oath, also congratulated the new leadership and acknowledged the outgoing team’s work.

Earlier, secretary general Ghulam Murtaza presented the agenda, which was adopted by a majority of members.
