Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday inaugurated Google Pakistan’s office in Islamabad, saying there was a great scope to have a wonderful partnership with Google and enhance our relationship in many ways.
“Google is a household name not only in Pakistan but around the globe,” PM Shehbaz said during a meeting with Vice President Global Affairs at Google Wilson L White. US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker was also present on this occasion.
The premier said it was a coincidence that Google had arrived at a time when Pakistan was going through a major digital transformation in many areas of the governance. “We have a youth bulge and we can really turn around Pakistan’s fortune,” he added.
Google Vice President Wilson said opening an office in Pakistan was a big milestone for the tech company. “We can’t tell you how excited we are for this combination of a very long time coming. Google has been investing in and is committed to Pakistan for over a decade. To be able to reach this milestone we are opening a local office which is a very special moment.
“Prime minister, your ambition of making Pakistan a $30bn IT export hub very much aligns with the goals that we have at Google.”
Wilson said over the past 10 years Google had contributed to more than Rs3.9 trillion of economic activity for local Pakistani businesses as well as households in Pakistan, contributing to over 960,000 jobs and this was just the beginning.
“We are committing and furthering your goal of $30bn IT export ambition in three big ways. We are doing it by investing in Pakistani people, manufacturing and infrastructure of export of hardware, thirdly we are investing in local businesses,” he maintained.
In terms of investing in Pakistani people, he said, Google felt that the digital transformation that’s underway in Pakistan would only be achievable if they invested in local people. “One of the things that we have been doing is upscaling Pakistanis. So we have contributed to upscaling over one million Pakistanis. We will make Google Gemini free for one year for students,” he said.
In November 2025, Federal Minister for IT & Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja had announced that Google, the global tech giant, had completed its registration in Pakistan and would soon establish a local office, as the manufacturing of Google Chromebooks had commenced in Haripur.
